There’s one sure way to guarantee mosquitoes will be biting you and your dinner guests at the next backyard cookout: allow standing water or overly saturated spots in your yard to persist. Water, after all, is all mosquitoes need to thrive; that's where they lay their eggs.
There are other, more serious problems than a few mosquito bites and the unsightly mess of a poorly drained yard.
It can damage your house and any other buildings on the property. Poor drainage causes foundation damage and other structural problems due to excess moisture in ground.
It’s an especially big problem in this area. Clay-based soils, like the ones found in Texas, can be most affected by poor drainage. They drain water very slowly, and the makeup of the soil causes significant expansion as it absorbs water. And when it dries, clay contracts quickly. That can cause foundation damage.
While not common to every property, more and more homes in Texas are being built with basements. Moisture problems in these homes are very common, but often are not understood or properly treated. Moisture problems in these places can be more than annoying; they can lead to health problems. Molds and mildew can grow in damp carpets, floorings and under wall coverings.
Additional symptoms and problems caused by drainage issues:
- Insect infestation, mold and allergens
- Cracks in interior walls and exterior surfaces
- Termites
- Discoloration and premature aging of concrete and exterior brick
- Sticking doors and windows
