Rain, Freeze and Wind Sensors

They used to simply be called rain gauges. Today, climate sensors do much more, helping control-clocks on sprinkler systems work more efficiently — in concert with outdoor weather conditions.

The high-tech devices measure moisture, wind speed and air temperature to determine when your sprinklers should be automatically turned off. If the ground is already moist from rain or if high winds will blow the sprinklers’ water spray off your property, shut-off modes automatically activate. That helps you save money on your water bill and keeps from wasting precious water.

Despite how advanced the sensors have become, the devices are easily installed on any sprinkler system and are a great way to save money on your water bill.

“You’re not just wasting water and needlessly running up your monthly water bill if your sprinkler system is running during a rain storm,” said Andy Hulcy, owner of Andy’s Sprinkler, Draining and Lighting. “Over-watering can lead to excess run off, which can wash out flower beds and cause root rot from over saturated soil.”

The freeze detectors on these sensors also provide a safety feature for both commercial and residential properties. Sprinkler systems that run during cold weather can cover delicate plants and shrubbery in ice, which can be harmful to many plants. One cycle of your sprinkler system during freezing weather can cause thousands of dollars in damages to your landscaping. More seriously, water spray and runoff can cause ice to form on sidewalks and in the street, leading to slips, falls and fender benders.

Did you know? With water conservation on everyone’s minds, many Texas cities now require homeowners to have climate sensors on their systems or face fines.
