In 1877, Major Converse bought a tract of land that included the modern day Converse. The Major became the chief engineer of the Southern Pacific Railroad, and the town was later named after him. By1896, Converse had a post office, grocery store, saloon, and two cotton gins. Originally a German community, Converse still had at least two large German organizations operating in 1990.
